TWIN FALLS, Idaho - Boyd Grant, who led the College of Southern Idaho Men's Basketball Program to its first NJCAA National Championship in 1976, passed away Monday morning on his 87th birthday after suffering a stroke over the weekend.
Grant coached at CSI from 1974 until 1977, taking second at the NJCAA National Tournament his first year before winning the title his second season. In his three years as the Golden Eagles leader, Grant finished with a 93-6 record.
"In the short amount of time that Boyd Grant was at CSI he had a lot of success, winning a national championship and qualifying for nationals in all three years he coached," said CSI Athletic Director
Joel Bate. "Coach Grant definitely put CSI on the map and left a tremendous benchmark for all other coaches to follow. He will always be a part of the legacy and tradition that is CSI Basketball."
Prior to coaching in Twin Falls, Grant (an American Falls native) played college basketball at Snow College and Colorado A&M (now Colorado State University). He went on to assist Jim Williams at CSU for 12 years before becoming the Golden Eagles Head Coach.
Grant, who was CSI's third men's basketball coach, also coached at Fresno State and Colorado State. After his coaching stint with CSI, Grant went on to become the winningest coach in Fresno State Men's Basketball history, guiding the Bulldogs to 194 wins. Over his nine seasons at Fresno State, he led the Bulldogs to three Pacific Coast Athletic Association titles, three NCAA Tournament appearances and the school's only appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. From Fresno State, Grant made the move to Colorado State, coaching there for four years. He guided CSU to consecutive Western Athletic Conference championships and NCAA Tournament appearances.
When he retired in 1991, Grant had compiled an overall NCAA Division I coaching record of 275-120.
Other accomplishments include: National Junior College Basketball Hall of Fame (1989), College of Southern Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame (1999) and Fresno Hall of Fame (1993).
