CSI Softball splits on final day of CSN Tourney

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 HENDERSON, Nev. - The 14th-ranked College of Southern Idaho Softball team lost a heartbreaker to #18 Pima 7-6 but bounced back to run rule El Paso 17-5 in five innings Saturday in the final day of the College of Southern Nevada Tournament.
The Golden Eagles looked poised to beat Pima, holding a 6-4 lead with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh. But a normally routine fly ball that would have ended the game was lost in the sun and all three Pima players scored for the win.
At the plate, four different CSI players finished 2-for-4. Madi Ford and Skylar Cook each had two singles. Hailey Hicks finished with a double and Katie Basinger had a triple in their 2-for-4 effort.
The Golden Eagles made sure it didn't come down to the final inning against El Paso. CSI trailed early 1-0 after El Paso hit a home run in the top of the first. But that lead would be short lived. The Golden Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the first and rolled from there, adding seven in the second inning.
After a huge day Friday, Melanie Groenewegen continued to shine. The freshman from British Columbia hit two home runs and a double, finishing with seven RBI. Shelby McKinnon also was solid at the plate, going 3-for-3.
In the circle, Samantha Riesen earned the win. She finished the game giving up six hits and four earned run with five strikeout.
The Golden Eagles, now 3-2 overall, are off next week before traveling to Florida for a tournament.
