CARSON CITY, Nev. - The 13th-ranked College of Southern Idaho Softball team fell 5-4 in extra innings Friday to Western Nevada before bouncing back to win 9-8 in extra innings and 12-8 in game three.
Nothing came easy for the Golden Eagles all day. Both teams agreed to play three games Friday with an inpending storm coming in. No one could have predicted two extra inning games and a high-scoring third game.
CSI jumped out to a 12-1 lead in the third game on 17 hits. But Western Nevada didn't give up, scoring six runs in the fifth to prevent the run rule. The Golden Eagles brought in Kelsey Christiansen in the seventh with a runner on and no outs. After giving up a single, she forced a pop out and a ground out that put across the eighth run for WNC before she got the ground out to third to put the game in the books.
Madi Ford finished the game 5-for-5 with a triple. Savannah Kirkpatrick was hot at the plate too, going 2-for-4 with a grand slam and six rbi. Sarah Phillips was 3-for-4 with two doubles and Jaici Bishop hit her 10th home run of the season.
CSI trailed much of game one before tying it in the top of the 7th when Ford singled and Abby Toller hit a double to put the Eagles up 4-3. But CSI couldn't contain Western Nevada in the bottom of the seventh. After a leadoff single and an error on CSI put the first two on, the Coyotes eventually scored two runs on a sac fly and a rbi-single for the walk-off win.
Christensen pitched well in the loss, giving up just five hits and two earned runs. Toller finished the game 4-for-4 with a double and two rbi. Ford was 3-for-4.
In game two, the Golden Eagles led 3-2 early but a solo home run by Western Nevada tied it up in the sixth. Neither team scored in the seventh and it looked like CSI blew the game open in the top of the eighth when it scored five runs. But the Coyotes answered with five runs of their own to send it to the ninth.
Again Toller came up big. The Golden Eagle sophomore led off the ninth inning with a single. After a fly ball out, Bishop knocked a double to advance Toller to third. A pop up put the second out on the board. Then Shelby Mckinnon came up with a single to put CSI up 9-8.
CSI's Kelsey Christensen came in to finish it in the circle for the Golden Eagles. With a lead off out, Western followed with a single and a walk before Christensen got the fly out and ground out to secure the win.
Toller finished the game 3-for-4 with a home run and a double.
