TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The College of Southern Idaho Women's Basketball Team fought back from a 25-point deficit Saturday to take the lead with 18 seconds to play, only to watch South Plains score on an inbounds pass at the buzzer and win 71-70 in the Idaho Central Credit Union Invitational.
The Golden Eagles took the the 70-69 lead when Finley Garnett knocked down a 3-pointer at the 18-second mark. South Plains Caroline Germond drove the lane and was fouled on a jumper with three seconds to play. She missed both free throws and Petra Farkas secured the rebound and what looked like the win before she was knocked to the floor and with one second to play called for a travel. South Plains lobbed in a pass under the basket and Ka'Lia Smith scored on the layup to give the Texans the win.
The Golden Eagles trailed 31-8 after the first quarter and 45-24 at the half but fought back behind a solid defense and some hot shooting. CSI shot 67 percent from the field in the second half and held South Plains to 41 percent.
Point Guard Karmelah Dean led the Golden Eagles in scoring with 16 points. She added five assists and four rebounds. Farkas scored 14 points for the Golden Eagles and had seven rebounds and three assists. Garnett led CSI on the boards with eight rebounds. She added 10 points and three assists and Allie Thayne finished with 10 points, six rebounds and three steals.
CSI, 5-2 host Williston State Friday and Edmonds CC Saturday in the Physician's Immediate Care Tournament.
