TWIN FALLS - Golden Eagle pitcher
Makay Nelson and the rest of the CSI Baseball team coasted into the ninth with a 4-0 lead Thursday and then with two outs and the bases loaded held on for the 4-2 victory.
Nelson kept the Spartan hitters off balance all night, finishing the game with 10 strikeouts and only three walks, giving up just five hits. With two outs, it seemed he'd go the distance and post the shutout. But CNCC's Benc Martinez started a run that made things interesting. Martinez walked followed by a walks by Larenz Stansfield and Gehrig Parks. The Golden Eagles made the switch on the mound to
Tyler Burdett, who gave up a single to Daniel Naus and a walk to Cruz Vigil. But that was to be all as Burdett struck out Zach Hoffman to end the threat and the game.
The game was more of a pitching duel as the Golden Eagles posted just two hits for the nine innings but some timely walks and six errors by the Spartans gave CSI the lead is never relinquished.
CSI's two hits were by
Kody Garvin and
Cole Walters.
The Golden Eagles improve to 10-7 overall and 2-3 in SWAC play. CSI hosts Colorado Northwestern Friday at 2 p.m. for a doubleheader.
