TWIN FALLS - After struggling with unforced errors Friday in the opening day of the Buffalo Wild Wings/Hilex Poly Tournament, the No. 1-ranked CSI volleyball team used great ball control to beat Snow 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 and 11th-ranked North Idaho 25-23, 25-18, 25-20 on Saturday.
Against the Badgers of Snow, Golden Eagle Dama Cox led the charge with 10 kills, 1 ace, 2 blocks and 7 digs. Setter Barbara Alcantara also had a solid game for CSI, finishing with 29 assists, 4 kills, 2 blocks and 12 digs.
It was the final match of the tournament where several Golden Eagle freshmen had a big impact. Outside hitter Rosie Becerra led CSI with 11 kills and only one hitting error. Middle blocker Beth Carey added 10 kills with no errors.
As impressive as the attack was, it was the serve receive and defense that keyed the offense. Freshman Libero Kianna Niu finished the match with 13 digs. Freshmen teammates Ashley Pollard and Teighlor Bair combined for 10 more digs.
The Golden Eagles, 5-1 overall, travel to Salt Lake next weekend where they will play Arizona Western, Missouri St. Univ. West Plains, Western Wyoming and Western Nebraksa.
