HUTCHINSON, Kan. - The College of Southern Idaho Volleyball put its 12th on the shelf Saturday, winning the NJCAA Division 1 National Championship by beating Miami-Dade CC 25-22, 25-12, 25-23.
The Golden Eagles completed their mission of winning for the late Heidi Cartisser who coached CSI to three national championships before her passing last December. Her husband
Jim Cartisser took over the program and carried on the legacy she created by winning his first national championship as a head coach and with that earned the Heidi Cartisser Coach of the National Tournament award.
CSI controlled the match from beginning to end behind the play of outside hitter
Airi Miyabe. The sophomore finished with 23 kills and two service aces to lead both teams. Nobody was better than Miyabe in the tournament. The Most Valuable Player of the Tournament averaged more than 5 kills per set and was virtually unstoppable in the championship. To put in perspective her contribution, Miami Dade's leading hitter in the match had six kills.
The Golden Eagles defense held Miami-Dade to a .095 hitting percentage.
Brianna Barta led the Eagles with six blocks. Letarone Mose added five and
E'laisah Young had four. In the back row,
Makayla Bradford finished with 18 digs.
Kylie Baumert had 12 and
Sacha Legros added nine.
Barta also led the Eagles with 20 assists.
Joining Miyabe on the NJCAA Division I National Tournament All-Tournament team from CSI was Baumert and
Payton Spoja.
CSI finishes the season with a 31-2 overall record.
