TWIN FALLS - Between the College of Southern Idaho and Snow College Friday, the two softball teams knocked 10 home runs out of the park with the Badgers getting six of the 10. But in the end, the run total favored the Golden Eagles in both games as they won 10-7 and 10-9.
In game one, CSI jumped out to a 5-2 lead in the first inning but watched it disappear in the third when the Badgers scored four runs to take the 6-5 lead. The Golden Eagles answered with two runs on a single and home run by
Katie Basinger. Snow responded in the top of the fourth with one run to tie the game up.
CSI went ahead for good in the bottom half of the inning when
Shelby McKinnon got on with an error, followed by a bunt single by
Madi Ford.
Erin Emanuel's 3-run homer would give the Golden Eagles the final 10-7 tally.
Melanie Groenewegen finished the game 3-for-4, while Ford and
Nicole Renner were 2-for-4.
Game two provided late-game heroics by both teams.
With a 6-4 lead heading into the seventh inning, CSI saw it disappear quickly. Golden Eagle pitcher
Samantha Riesen issued walks to two of the first three hitters sandwiched around a fly-out to right. A fielder's choice out put CSI within one out of the win. The Golden Eagles chose to walk Alyssa Arslanian, who had already hit three home runs on the day to load the bases. Sarah Sandberg belted a single to score one before Dakota Gee hit a grand slam to give Snow the 9-6 lead.
CSI wasn't done though. Groenewegen led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and then Renner hit a bomb over the left-field scoreboard to pull within one run. After a fly-out to right field,
Courtney Argyle walked and
Jaici Bishop hit a single to left. Haylee Eskelsen loaded the bases with a pinch-hit single. After a pop out to shortstop,
Sarah Phillips came through with the pinch-hit two-rbi bloop single to right field for the win.
The Golden Eagles finished the game with 16 hits. Renner was 2-for-3 with two RBI, Argyle was 2-for-2. Speedsters
Madi Ford and Skylar Cook combined to go 5-for-7 with one RBI and three runs scored.Â
CSI, 11-0 overall and 3-3 in SWAC play, host Snow College again Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
