TWIN FALLS - With hopes of defending its NJCAA 2016 National Championship, the fourth-ranked College of Southern Idaho volleyball team jumped out to a one-set lead and a huge lead in set two but couldn't sustain, falling to Salt Lake CC 23-25, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18 Saturday in the Region 18 Championship.
For the first time in a long time only one team will represent the region at nationals leaving the Golden Eagles out and unable to compete for their 12th national championship.
Everything seemed to be going CSI's way as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 13-3 lead in the second set. But Salt Lake made an adjustment and dominated the Eagles at the net defensively the rest of the way.Â
After just three blocks in the opening set, Salt Lake finished with a total of 25.5 blocks for the match compared to 8.5 for CSI.
The Golden Eagles hit just .108 for the match with only two players finishing above .300. One was setter
Marija Djonovic with five kills and a .500 percentage. The other was
Shiloh Peleras, who had 17 kills and hit .343. Djonovic added 54 assists and 12 digs. Both Djonovic and Peleras made the all-tournament team. Libero
Luana Thompson was a bright spot with 19 digs and no reception errors.
CSI finishes it season 27-6 overall.Â
