Golden Eagle Softball finishes 6-1 in Arizona

YUMA, Ariz. - The 17th-ranked College of Southern Idaho softball team posted a 6-1 record in the Arizona Western Shootout, falling only to top-ranked Yavapai 1-0.
The Golden Eagles opened the tournament with six straight wins, beating Arizona Western 5-3 and Mesa 10-3 on day one; Eastern Arizona 6-4, Arizona Western 8-0 and Golden west 9-1 on day two; and El Paso 6-2 on day three before falling to Yavapai in the final game.
Patti Ferguson led the team offensively, hitting .500 on the weekend with a home run and six RBI. Lea Hopson hit .360 with 10 RBI and three stolen bases.
But it was in the circle that CSI really shined.
Jessi Duncan and Jyl Eckstein did not give up an earned run all weekend. The sophomores combined for 21 innings pitched, a 3-0 record and 14 strikeouts. Nellie Makings posted a 2.33 era with nine strikeouts and a 2-1 record. The freshman did not give up an earned run against top-ranked Yavapai.
The Golden Eagles travel to St. George next week to open Region 18 play. CSI plays Southern Nevada Wednesday and Thursday and Colorado NW Friday and Saturday.
