HENDERSON, Nev. - The 17th-ranked College of Southern Idaho softball team played well at times and tired at times in its opening weekend at the Las Vegas Kickoff Classic.
The Golden Eagles started the opening day Friday at the field at 8:30 a.m. and left the field for the final time that night after midnight, only to arrive at the field at 6 a.m. the next morning for the second day.
CSI fell to top-ranked Yavapai 10-0 in its opening game of the season before beating Gateway and Phoenix on Friday. On Saturday, the Golden Eagles lost by one run to Glendale 10-9 and 9th-ranked Pima 6-5 in extra innings before losing their final game 7-1 to Eastern Arizona.
The Golden Eagles hit the ball well for an early season tournament, averaging .331 as a team and hitting eight home runs, five triples and 10 doubles.
Nikki Brailsford led CSI with three homeruns and a .429 average. Kylee Hogue was close behind at .421 for the weekend.
In the circle, Nellie Makings led the Eagles with the lowest era and 11 strikeouts in 12 innings. She finished the weekend with a 1-0 record. Grace Combs also had a solid weekend, throwing 13 innings with a 1-2 record.
CSI travels to Yuma, Arizona next weekend for seven games in the Arizona Western Shootout.
