TWIN FALLS - The College of Southern Idaho baseball team knocked off No. 1 ranked Salt Lake CC three times this weekend in a Scenic West Athletic Conference series, beating the Bruins 1-0 on Friday and 6-5 and 8-7 on Saturday. The lone loss came in the second game Friday where the Bruins won 7-4.
Paul Schaak set the tone early in the weekend, throwing six innings in game one and giving up just two hits and no runs. CSI managed just one run on four hits but it was enough to pull out the win.
On Saturday, the Golden Eagles came from behind in both games to earn the wins.
Ben Douglas was key at the plate all day. The first baseman went 5-for-7 with two RBI.
Trailing 5-4,
Tyler Vavra came into the game in the third inning of game one Saturday and threw three innings of scoreless ball, giving up just two hits and earned the win.
Brandon Petite earned the save with one inning of solid work.
In game two,
Tyler Vavra came into the game in the 7th inning with the teams tied at 7. He gave up no hits or runs in 1.1 innings of work and earned his second win of the day.
CSI scored the winning run in the bottom of the 8th when
Kendal Maier reached base on an error.
Andrew Freter was hit by a pitch to put two on with no outs. After
Andre Ashton reached on a fielder's choice that got Maier out at third.
Blake Lively came to the plate and singled. An error by the right fielder allowed Freter to score the winning run and end the game.
CSI improves to 28-16 overall and 20-12 in conference play. Western Nevada is in first in the league with a 29-3 record, while Salt Lake stands in second at 26-6. The winner of the conference will host the Region 18 Tournament.
