CSI Softball starts league play 7-1 in St. George

ST. GEORGE, Utah - The College of Southern Idaho softball team lost just one game in its opening eight Scenic West Athletic Conference matchups.
CSI beat Southern Nevada 9-1 and 6-3 on Wednesday and split thursday, losing 5-3 and winning 13-3. The Golden Eagles swept Colorado NW, winning 9-6, 9-0, 23-2 and 19-0 Friday and Saturday.
Jessi Duncan had a noteworthy appearance Wednesday in the opener against CSN, throwing a 2-hitter. Duncan finished the game with six strikeouts and one walk. Latieshia Webster led CSI at the plate, going 2-for-2 with a home run and three RBI.
In game two, Marina Groenewegen came up big for CSI. She finished the game 4-for-4 with a home run.
The Golden Eagles came out flat Thursday morning, struggling to get their bats going. CSI ended with just six hits to CSN's 12 in the loss. Again Groenewegen came up big in the second-game win. The CSI third baseman finished 4-for-4 with seven RBI and two home runs, one was a grandslam.
Against Colorado NW on Friday and Saturday, CSI posted 65 hits in the four games. Highlighting the series was a no-hitter thrown by CSI's Jyl Eckstein in the final game. The freshman pitcher gave up no runs and no hits with three walks and eight strikeouts.
CSI, which improved to 13-8 overall and 7-1 in league play, hosts Salt Lake CC Friday at 1 and 3 p.m. and Saturday at noon and 2 p.m. The Bruins are one game ahead of CSI with an 8-0 SWAC record.
