HENDERSON, Nev. - The 15th-ranked College of Southern Idaho softball team knew opening weekend against all warm-weather schools would be tough.
Add to that the level of competition and opening weekend handed the Golden Eagles six losses.
CSI fell to No. 5 Chipola 11-0, No. 2 Yavapai 3-0, No. 9 Chatanooga St. 9-0, No. 12 Pima 10-6, Division II 6th-ranked South Mountain 11-10 and Central Arizona 7-5.
"On paper, the results do not look good," said CSI head coach Nick Baumert. "But I think we are a lot closer than the scores appear. We saw a lot of good things in certain spots. We typically struggle hitting this early and this was our first opportunity to see dirt. And we played a higher level of teams in this tournament than we have the past two years."
One highlight of the weekend was NJCAA All American Mikkel Griffin. The CSI sophomore second baseman finished the tournament hitting .526 with two doubles and two home runs. Leadoff hitter Marie Williams also had a solid weekend, hitting .364. Even more impressive was her play in the outfield. The sophomore center fielder was solid all weekend, making two catches on the fence and one sliding catch.
With sophomore pitcher Kelsey Bryant unable to pitch most of the tournament with a hurt back, freshmen Jessi Duncan and Jyl Eckstein pitched most of the CSI innings. Eckstein posted 15 strikeouts in 15 innings of work, while Duncan held her opponents to a .284 batting average.
"We had too many walks and free passes," Baumert said. "But all three pitchers had moments of what we know they are capable of and what we will expect with more experience."
