COEUR D'ALENE, Idaho - The 9th-ranked College of Southern Idaho rolled past Colorado Northwestern CC 25-15, 25-10, 25-15 Friday in its opening match and then knocked off 7th-ranked Salt Lake 16-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-12 to advance to the Region 18 Championship Saturday at 2 p.m. MST against North Idaho.
The Golden Eagles fell behind early against Salt Lake committing 31 errors of Salt Lake's first 50 points. But sophomore Beth Carey put the young CSI team on her shoulders and led them back. The sophomore Australian finished with 18 kills and just one hitting error along with six blocks.
Emily Ottinger added 15 kills for the Golden Eagles.
In the opening match against Colorado Northwestern, Taylor Wilkinson led the way with eight kills. Marie Fujii, Sierra Hansen, Emily Ottinger and Taila Gnass each added seven kills. Ottinger added 10 digs and Gnass finished with 11 digs.
After the Salt Lake match, the all Region 18 selections were announced. Beth Carey and Keani Passi earned first team honors. Ashia Joseph was named to the second team and Taylor Wilkinson earned honorable mention. CSI's libero Heather Meeuwsen was named Libero of the Year.
CSI plays in the Region 18 Championship Saturday at 2 p.m. MST. The Golden Eagles already have secured a berth in the NJCAA National Tournament Nov. 17-19 in West Plains, Missouri.
