HOUSTON, Texas - The 5th-ranked College of Southern Idaho beat 4th-ranked Blinn College 21-25, 27-25, 25-23, 25-23 in the Golden Eagles opening match of the Houston Tournament Friday and followed it with a 5-set victory over Lee College 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 25-18, 15-10.
Southern Idaho took advantage of its strength in the middle and Blinn's hitting errors to pull away in the last three games.
Middle blocker Beth Carey led the Eagles with 15 kills and just one error. Alyssa Everett added 12 kills in the middle.
Against Lee, CSI's Kianna Niu set the Golden Eagle match record for digs with 35, previously held by Britani Hawthorn, who had 29 last season against Snow College.
Carey again carried the Golden Eagles offensively putting down 14 kills with no hitting errors. Jesse Dill and Taylor Wilkinson came in to spark CSI. Dill finished with 1 kill and 2 blocks, while Wilkinson had 5 kills and 3 blocks.
CSI improves to 9-2 overall with five wins over top 20 teams.
The Golden Eagles play Navarro, San Jacinto and Galveston Saturday.
