SALT LAKE CITY, Utah - The 12th-ranked College of Southern Idaho claimed second place in the Region 18 Tournament Saturday, losing to top-ranked Salt Lake in the championship game 6-2 and dashing all hopes of a national tournament berth.
The Golden Eagles beat Southern Nevada 8-0 in five innings on Thursday to advance to the undefeated game against Salt Lake on Friday. CSI took a 7-4 lead into the 7th inning and looked in control to move straight into the championship. An untimely error and an eventual home run by Salt Lake tied the game in the bottom of the seventh and sent the game into extra innings.
Salt Lake's Cyd Allen took a 1-2 pitch over the left-field fence in the bottom of the eighth to give Salt Lake the 8-7 victory and drop the Eagles into the losers' bracket.
CSI rebounded Saturday morning with a 3-2 win over Snow College before falling to SLCC 6-2 in the championship game. The Golden Eagles still made the game interesting, loading the bases in the top of the 7th. But CSI couldn't push runs across and a strikeout ended the run.
The Golden Eagles finished the season with a 47-20 overall record and a 35-14 Scenic West Athletic Conference Record. CSI has competed in the Region 18 Championship every year of the program's existence.
