TWIN FALLS, Idaho - The 6th-ranked Golden Eagles accomplished something no other team in the nation has been able to do this year - beat the top-ranked and undefeated Salt Lake Bruins 12-7 Friday in Scenic West Athletic Conference action.
After Salt Lake tied the game in the top of the 5th inning, the Bruins went to reliever Reilly O'Brien in the circle. The Golden Eagles put one run up in the bottom of the fifth when
Marie Williams hit a single up the middle to score
Marina Groenewegen.
CSI ace
Generra Nielson held Salt Lake scoreless in the sixth and let her offense go to work.
Lyndi Miller led off the inning with a single, followed by another single by
Kelsey Bryant.
Brittany Gonzales posted her third hit of the game in the form of a homerun, bringing in three runs. The Golden Eagles scored one more run when
MeChel Hunt doubled to bring in Groenewegen.
That lead was all Nielson needed as she held the Bruins scoreless in the 7th to earn her 19th win of the season.
With the wind blowing out, it was a hitters' game. In all, there were 29 hits, four homeruns, one triple and four doubles.
The wind picked up and snow started coming down to start game two. The Golden Eagles trailed 18-4 in the second game but the game was suspended in the middle of the fourth due to inclement weather. CSI and Salt Lake will resume that game Saturday at noon. The Golden Eagles will have bases loaded with no outs in the bottom of the fourth when the game resumes.
CSI moves to 32-10 overall and 23-5 in SWAC play. With the loss, Salt Lake dropped to 39-1 overall and 27-1 in league action.
Once the suspended game is completed, the regularly scheduled doubleheader will begin on Saturday.
